Relativity of Time and Length

The objective of the activity is to simulate the relativistic effects of high velocity on the measurements of time intervals and distances.

Data and Observations
Relativity of Time:
  1. The moving light clock measures a larger time interval than the stationary one.
  2. Since the speed of light is always the same, if the distance of one path is longer, then the time it takes to travel that path will be longer.
  3. Since the distance measured from the light clock is longer, it takes a longer time.
  4. Since time dilation is directly proportional to velocity, if velocity decreases, then so does the difference in measured times.

Relativity of Distance:
  1. No, because being on the light clock means having a stationary frame of reference.
  2. The observer on the Earth will measure a larger value for the time.
  3. Since the speed of light is always constant, if time is dilated, then length has to be contracted.
